If you’ve noticed loose skin, weakened abdominal muscles, or persistent fat around your midsection, especially after pregnancy, major weight loss, or natural aging, you’re not alone. These concerns are incredibly common, and they’re exactly what a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is designed to address.

At Avenue Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery in Athens, GA, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Chelsea Venditto customizes tummy tuck procedures to each patient’s unique anatomy and goals. While tummy tucks are often part of a more comprehensive transformation (like a Mommy Makeover), they’re powerful on their own for creating a flatter, more contoured midsection.

What Is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck reshapes the abdomen by:

  • Removing excess skin and fat
  • Repairing and tightening abdominal muscles (especially helpful for post-pregnancy rectus diastasis)
  • Restoring a firmer, flatter appearance to your core

Dr. Venditto often performs liposuction alongside tummy tucks to further sculpt the waistline, and depending on your needs, may recommend combining procedures for a more complete transformation.

Types of Tummy Tucks

Not every tummy tuck is the same. There are several techniques tailored to different body types and goals:

1. Mini Tummy Tuck

Best for: Patients with mild skin laxity or muscle separation limited to the area below the belly button.

What It Involves:

  • A smaller incision, low on the abdomen
  • Tightening of the lower abdominal muscles
  • Removal of limited excess skin and fat
  • No belly button repositioning required

This is a great option for individuals close to their goal weight with a stubborn lower belly “pooch.” It typically involves less downtime and a quicker recovery than a full tummy tuck.

2. Full (Standard) Tummy Tuck

Best for: Patients with significant skin laxity and muscle separation in the upper and lower abdomen.

What It Involves:

  • A low horizontal incision from hip to hip (easily hidden beneath underwear or swimsuits)
  • Tightening of abdominal muscles across the entire midsection
  • Removal of excess skin and fat
  • Repositioning of the belly button for a natural look

This is the most commonly performed tummy tuck and provides a dramatic improvement in both abdominal contour and core strength.

3. Extended Tummy Tuck

Best for: Individuals with significant weight loss or excess skin that extends to the flanks or lower back.

What It Involves:

  • A longer incision that extends beyond the hips
  • Tightening of abdominal muscles
  • Removal of excess skin and fat across the front and sides of the torso

This procedure is ideal for patients with more extensive skin laxity and is often part of a post-weight-loss body contouring plan.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

During your tummy tuck consultation, Dr. Venditto will assess whether you’re a strong candidate based on your health, anatomy, and personal goals.

You might be a great candidate if you’re in good overall health and you’ve reached or are close to your ideal weight. This procedure isn’t meant to be a weight loss solution but rather to address loose skin or stretched muscles. Oftentimes, this procedure is used to repair the rectus diastasis from pregnancy or for people who have lost a considerable amount of weight.

And finally, mindset matters. A tummy tuck is a major surgical procedure, so if you have a stable emotional well-being, have realistic expectations, and are doing this to feel more confident in your own body, then this could be a really great decision for you.

Choosing the Right Type of Tummy Tuck

The best tummy tuck for you depends on your body’s condition, your goals, and the amount of excess skin or muscle separation you’re experiencing. During your consultation, Dr. Chelsea Venditto will carefully evaluate your anatomy and help you choose the procedure that will deliver the best, most natural-looking results.

What to Expect from Surgery & Recovery

Surgery Day:

On the day of your procedure, you will be placed under general anesthesia, which means you won’t be awake for the surgery. Then, an incision will be made on the low abdomen, typically from hip to hip, designed to be easily concealed under most underwear or swimsuits. The length of the incision depends on the type of tummy tuck chosen.

If your abdominal muscles have separated, which is common after pregnancy or significant weight changes, they will be repaired and tightened to help restore your core strength and create a flatter, more toned appearance. From there, any excess skin and fat will be carefully removed to contour the area, and if needed, your belly button will be repositioned for a natural appearance.

Finally, the incisions will be closed with absorbable sutures and a compression garment will be placed to help minimize swelling and support your healing. The entire procedure is designed to be customized to you. Your anatomy, your goals, and your safety always come first.

Drainless Approach:

Dr. Venditto uses a drainless technique for a tummy tuck.  This allows her patients to shower 48 hours after surgery and avoid the hassle associated with the presence of drains.  Instead of drains, special sutures called Progressive Tension Sutures are used to close down the surgical space created and better accentuate the natural abdominal contour.

Recovery Timeline:

Recovery after a tummy tuck really depends on the extent of your procedure, but here’s what most patients can expect.

You’ll go home the same day wearing a compression garment to reduce swelling and support your results as you heal. You will be walking with a hunch for a few days until your first post-operative visit.  You can shower 48 hours after surgery.  You’ll likely feel sore for the first few days, which is completely normal, and we’ll prescribe any medication needed to keep you comfortable.

It’s important to take it easy those first couple of weeks. Short, slow walks are encouraged to reduce the risk of blood clots, but you’ll want to avoid anything strenuous or heavy lifting for at least six weeks. Most people are able to return to work within two to three weeks, depending on how physical their job is.

You’ll start to notice changes in your shape almost immediately, but swelling will take time to go down, so your final results really start to appear a few months after surgery. By six months, you’ll see a flatter, firmer, more contoured midsection that continues to improve as your body fully heals. As for any scarring, there will be an incision line, but it is placed low enough on the abdomen that it can be hidden beneath underwear or swimwear most of the time.

Why Consider a Tummy Tuck?

Beyond aesthetic benefits, a tummy tuck can:

  • Restore abdominal strength and posture
  • Improve comfort in clothing
  • Boost self-confidence
  • Help you feel more at home in your body after life changes
